Why American society sucks

Dress has been subverted by two anti-social authorities: 1) corporations and 2) an obsession with eternal youth, not surprisingly also supplied by corporations. Social enforcement of dress has fallen by the wayside; in its place, corporations have legalized social mores. Because corporate dress codes are implemented by punishment rather than respect, people naturally feel they are worthless. When they get the choice, people choose dress that makes them feel young or tough, rather than mature.
Filial piety has become a self-contradictory neurosis. Instead of having normal duties or obligations that bring one's parents into everyday life, Americans seem to achieve adulthood by moving away from their parents, thus becoming closer through separation. Of course, this doesn't eliminate the most basic and obvious filial piety of caring for aged parents, so an entire industry has been developed to solve that problem with money.
Food. There has been very little counterbalance to laziness on this topic-- long work hours don't help either. Food traditions and the social aspects of eating have been ignored in favor of instant gratification. This is one of my pet peeves about my own life, because I can't cook for shit. [1]

Why American society is awesome

Freedom. We loves our freedom, even if it causes most of these problems (which would be resolved by creating Snow Crash-style enclaves). See also the United States article.
Anti-racism. The average American can perceive racism quite easily and does not tolerate it.
